Introduction to High Carbon Ferrochrome
High carbon ferrochrome is an important alloy material, widely used in steel and cast iron production. Its main uses include serving as an alloying agent to enhance the hardenability, wear resistance, and hardness of bearing steel, tool steel, and high-speed steel; as an additive to improve the wear resistance, hardness, and heat resistance of cast iron; and as a chromium raw material for producing silicon-chrome alloys and medium, low, and micro-carbon ferrochrome by slag-free methods, as well as for producing metallic chromium by electrolysis. Additionally, it is used as a raw material for the oxygen-blown method of stainless steel smelting.

Smelting Methods of High Carbon Ferrochrome
The main smelting methods for high carbon ferrochrome include blast furnace method, electric furnace method, and plasma furnace method. The blast furnace method is mainly used to produce special pig iron with about 30% chromium, while high-chromium high carbon ferrochrome products are usually smelted in a submerged arc furnace using the electric furnace method. The electric furnace method utilizes carbon to reduce the chromium and iron oxides in chromium ore to produce high carbon ferrochrome. The key is to control the reaction temperature to produce chromium carbides with varying carbon content.

Raw Materials for Smelting High Carbon Ferrochrome
The main raw materials for smelting high carbon ferrochrome include chromium ore, coke, and quartzite. Chromium ore should have a Cr2O3 content of at least 40%, a Cr2O3/∑FeO ratio greater than 2.5, and sulfur and phosphorus content below 0.05% and 0.07%, respectively; coke should have a fixed carbon content of at least 84%, ash content below 15%, and sulfur content below 0.6%; quartzite should contain SiO2≥97%, Al2O3≤1.0%, and possess good thermal stability and appropriate particle size.
