Uses and Applications of Pure Chromium Metal
Pure chromium metal is primarily used in the production of stainless steel and alloy steels. In stainless steel, chromium is typically added in quantities exceeding 12%, enhancing its corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability. Chromium is also used as an additive in aluminum alloys, cobalt alloys, and titanium alloys, where it improves the mechanical properties and durability of these materials. Additionally, chromium is used in high-temperature alloys and electrical resistance heating alloys to enhance their stability and performance. Chromium oxide is widely used in light- and heat-resistant coatings, as well as abrasives, coloring agents for glass and ceramics, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis.

Toxicity and Safety of Chromium
The toxicity of chromium is closely related to its oxidation state. Hexavalent chromium (Cr^6+) is 100 times more toxic than trivalent chromium (Cr^3+) and is more readily absorbed by the body, where it can accumulate. In contrast, trivalent chromium is relatively stable and less toxic. Natural water sources contain very low levels of chromium, with an average concentration of 0.05 µg/l in seawater and even lower concentrations in drinking water. Major sources of chromium pollution include the processing of chromium ore, metal surface treatment, leather tanning, and dyeing industries.

Industrial Emissions of Chromium
Chromium pollution is primarily caused by industrial activities, including chromium mining, smelting, chromium salt production, electroplating, metal processing, leather tanning, and dyeing. These industrial processes release chromium compounds into the environment, leading to pollution. For example, the leather industry can discharge 50-60 tons of chromium-containing wastewater per ton of raw hides processed, amounting to 72-86 tons of chromium per year if ten tons of hides are processed daily. Therefore, careful management is required to minimize the environmental and health impacts of chromium use and emissions.
